Shanksville Community Picnic
August 5 @ 4:00 pm - August 7 @ 10:30 pm
ANNUAL SHANKSVILLE COMMUNITY PICNIC DAY ONE, FRIDAY, AUGUST 5th thru 7th
The Shanksville Community Picnic, first celebrated in 1930 and now sponsored by the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department, kicks off at 4:00 PM, Friday, August 5, with the opening of games and the kitchen at the community grove. At 6:30 PM there will be a parade up Main Street ending at the grove. Following the parade, “Ridgemont High,” a popular Pittsburgh area band specializing in 80’s rock, will take the bandstand amphitheater stage for a free concert from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Concert goers are advised to bring their own chairs and blankets for comfortable seating.
On Saturday, August 6, the kitchen and games open at 11:00 AM with a menu of BBQ chicken, fresh-cut fries, homemade pie, ice cream, pulled pork, burgers, hot dogs, sides and beverages. Games include chuck-a-luck, dunk tank, mechanical pig race, dime toss, fishbowl toss, duck pond, and a giant bouncy race. There will be a huge basket raffle and a guns and ammo raffle.
Kids can try their hand with a real fire hose hooked up to the SVFD heavy rescue pumper truck. The Med-Star helicopter is planning to land around 12:30 PM and then open for tours.
Beginning at noon on Saturday, there will be live music all afternoon and evening. Next Gen will be playing from noon to 2:30 PM, followed by Glory Guys from 3 -5 PM and featuring the Somerset County Community Band at 6:00 PM. Topping off the evening will be a free concert at the bandstand amphitheater by “Ole ’97”, a Johnny Cash tribute band, from 7:30 to 10:30 PM. This high-energy, interactive show includes special tributes to Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Waylon Jennings, and other classic performers, but the main music is always “the man in black.” Re-live memories with Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Jackson, Walk the Line, and more. Bring chairs and blankets for seating.
All picnic proceeds help the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department serve the community.
